Kokkola (Swedish: Karleby, formerly Gamlakarleby) is a Finnish town and the centre of the province of Central Ostrobothnia on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Kokkola is located about 120 km north of Vaasa and about 200 km south of Oulu. The town has a population of 48 055, of whom 83.8 % speak Finnish as their mother tongue, 12.3 % Swedish and 3.9 % are foreign speakers. Kokkola is the northernmost bilingual municipality in Finland. The events and services offered by the local congregations are open to all. The German Congregation here regularly organises church services and other events in German language.
