Tampere (Swedish: Tammerfors) is the regional centre of Pirkanmaa and lies on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi. Tampere is the third largest municipality in Finland—in terms of population—and with its surrounding municipalities is the second largest urban area in Finland. Tampere has about 245 000 inhabitants. The Tampere Association of Evangelical Lutheran Congregations comprises a total of five regional congregations, four Finnish–speaking and one Swedish–speaking, which are functionally independent units with a total of about 146 000 members. The events, activities and services offered by the local parishes are open to everybody. The German Congregation here regularly organises church services and other events in German language.
