Lappeenranta (Swedish: Villmanstrand) is the provincial centre of South Karelia and is located on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa in the province of South Karelia. The city is located in the area between the southern shore of the Saimaa river basin and the Russian border. Until 1945 Lappeenranta belonged to the province of Vyborg, until 1997 to the province of Kymi and until 2009 to the province of Southern Finland. Lappeenranta is the thirteenth largest city in Finland with 72 231 inhabitants. The events, activities and services offered by the local church communities are open to all. The German Congregation here regularly organises church services and other events in German language.
